Summer Guide

Summer Guide

In summer, we are a biking town.  You’ll see road riders up and down HWY 135 and the mountain biking is truly world class.  Although we have arm wrestled with Marin, California on who gets to claim to be the birthplace of mountain biking, noone will disagree with the fact that we have some of the most amazing mountain biking trails in the world.  Not sure where to go on a gorgeous summers day?  Just call any of our local bike shops, Function Before Fashion, Big Al’s, or The Alpineer.  Not a cross country rider?  Just go right up to the ski area and rent a downhill mountain bike and try your skills on some really amazing trails that Crested Butte Mountain Resort has built over the years.

The base of the mountain offers tons of fun with some of the same options as the winter plus a few more. Drop the kids at the Bungy Jump, Climbing wall, and miniature golf course or take them up the chairlift and hike to the top of Mt. Crested Butte.

Fly fishing in the area is incredible and there are many guiding services to help you catch that rainbow trout of your dreams!  Hike over to Aspen through the Maroon Bells or just catch one of the numerous trails that abound out your door.

The Club at Crested Butte offers a semi-private golf course that was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.  You can play tennis at the free courts in town that have just been resurfaced.

We could go on and on here but as you can see, our area has an amazing array of things for every age group!  Come see us, we promise you won’t be sorry!

BASE AREA ACTIVITIES

Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s base area Adventure Park comes complete with miniature golf, bungee trampolines,  and a climbing wall. The bungee trampolines provide a turbo-charged, gravity-defying ride up to 30 feet in the air, while the Climbing Pinnacle features a 28-foot, 6-route tower with auto-belay. The Adventure Park is open year-round. Tickets are available at the Adventure Center in Mountaineer Square and at the Specialized Rental & Demo Center located in the Treasury Building.

NORDIC SKIING

The Crested Butte Nordic Center, a full-service cross-country ski center conveniently located in the town of Crested Butte, is open for the season mid-November through early April and starts grooming trails by Lily Lake in early November. Beginners can rent equipment and take a lesson, while long-time classic skiers can learn to skate ski with local instructors for free the first Thursday of each month (Check their Event Calendar for more details). Those willing to make their own trails can head out in the backcountry, after checking the avalanche danger, on a tour to Gothic or beyond. Kids ski free and also receive free ski rentals!  The Nordic Center also offers weekly yurt dinners during the winter.  Check their website for information about this unique experience.

You may even want to participate in the famed “Alley Loop” Race put on each year. This is an event not to be missed, with races ranging in length from 1.5 km for the kids to a full-length Nordic Marathon.

SLEDDING & ICE SKATING

Near the Nordic Center in the town of Crested Butte is a terrific sledding hill as well as ice rink. Sleds and ice skates can be rented from the Nordic Center at nominal prices. This is a great apres ski activity for kids of all ages and is located on the free shuttle bus route in town.

SNOWMOBILING

If you’re looking for something a little different on your vacation, you may want to give snowmobiling with a local snowmobile guide a try. With a guide and a “sled” (as the locals call it), you have the opportunity to get a little further off the beaten path and explore areas it would take hours, if not days, to reach on foot. With a snowmobile, a quick 15 minute ride will get you out there.

THE TRAILHEAD CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

The Trailhead Children’s Museum’s mission is to offer an engaging and dynamic environment that inspires children and families to explore, create and learn together through discovery and play.  Check out their website for more information www.trailheadkids.org.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

The town of Crested Butte is known for its historic, colorful wooden buildings with an equally quirky local population. Plenty of retail stores and restaurants fill our little town. If you are tired of being outdoors and need a nice quiet respite inside, check out the movies at the Majestic Theater next door to Clark’s Market. Another wonderful option are the many performance offerings at the Crested Butte Center for the Arts.
